In the mid-1400s, a man by the name of Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press. The printing press allowed for the mass production of manuscripts, articles, novels, etc. The introduction of movable type paved the way for more creative ways to get the word out. In 1868, a man named Christopher Sholes, with the help of mechanic Carlos Glidden, invented the first commercially successful version of the typewriter. In a world where handwriting was standard practice, the Remington No. 1 found little success, with skeptics concerned with the idea of “mechanical writing”. It wasn’t until industrialization and the specialization of work that the typewriter found its place amongst the business and administrative world.

In addition to providing us with the QWERTY keyboard, the typewriter modernized the way we communicate. We are now able to share knowledge in a way our predecessors never were. We exist in a world where communication is now instant. A world where messages to one another are sent and received in the blink of an eye. Our ability to reach a grander audience is vastly more possible. Now the question remains, what’s stopping us? Why are we still afraid to type what we feel? When will we not be afraid to show our true fonts? What’s stopping us from solidifying our dreams through courier new? The answer is simple…nothing!
